The largest donation (of love)

We receive donations from people who are from all walks of life – especially many middle class people who believe they need to give back to society. Every bit is really appreciated.

The largest donation (not monetarily but of love) we have received is from Mohan our visually impaired student who hails from a very poor family and does not look to his family for support.  He has also had a troubled past and I would like to believe that he is part of our family and we have been able to give him peace and much more apart from his computer training.

Some months back he came to me and said “Miss -our computer training has finished and I was reimbursed my refundable deposit.  Please don’t mind  – I want to donate that deposit of 200 Rs to Enable India”. My emotions are generally always controlled because I believe that only emotions converted to action are of use. I was extremely touched and my eyes started getting moist. I told him “You have no money whatsoever. Why do you want to give this to us?”

His answer was “Miss – I have got more than money at Enable India. I have learnt everything here – I have learnt about life. I have gained peace here…” he mentioned other things that I cannot remember. “That is much more than any money of the world”. I had no answer for him and accepted the donation gratefully.

I think we all will agree that Mohan cannot be considered poor – any person who does not “desire” money is truly enlightened. Hats off to my sweet student 🙂 He has a long way to go in terms of his knowledge of the real world and he has yet to be gainfully employed ( We are desperately looking since he needs it urgently!) But I know that only the best is in store for him.

Vision of Enable India

Persons with disabilities in India find it very hard to get employment. This is true especially for persons with sensory (visual and hearing) disability and mental disabilities. They are sometimes just not aware of the jobs available and nor are they prepared with the right education, skill sets or attitude. Most know little about the technical and other aids or methods they could use at the workplace to carry out a wide range of tasks and responsibilities. EnAble India educates and trains persons with disabilities and prepares them to join the mainstream workforce as confident individuals …

Organizations in the private and public sector, barring a few, are unaware that people with disabilities too form a talented and committed human resource pool and could be a part of a productive workforce. There is also little awareness about the fact that the disabled can work efficiently in a variety of functions with the help of simple technology and other assistive aids . EnAble India works towards making people with disabilities a part of every corporate hiring plan.

Families, the society at large and the government together need to create a strong supportive environment for people with disabilities to help them grow into confident , independent and productive individuals. EnAble India is committed to dispelling both sympathy and apathy and achieving this transition.
